Riad Al Rayyan

Research

We understand architecture as the universal medium of communication — we try to think bigger, proposing to clients our complex vision of the project. Our approach is illustrated in the case of Riad renovation in Marrakech, Medina. Client’s request was to renovate traditional Moroccan housing into a boutique hotel. For us it was a unique chance to do the whole program of this space, hand-picking every detail.

The goal of this album is to transform the Riad into an unforgettable part of one’s journey to Marrakech. Through its space and artifacts, as well as through exquisite service and events, the guests will be able to discover Moroccan and Berber culture.

A well-thought interior, where every detail tells a story, a hidden garden to relax and a handful of unique rooms to feel like home will make Riad the one’s favourite place to stay in Marrakech.

We have started our work with research exploring the cultural context of Marrakech and the typologies of Berber traditional housing, including Riad — a house with an inner garden.

We have also taken several trips to Marrakech to get acquainted with the building and, what is equally important, with the city’s vibrant culture. In our research we have also included the examples of boutique hotels situated in Riads, defining their strong features and zonal peculiarities.

We have applied our knowledge to Riad’s new program. The renovation preserves the treasures of the historic building — original zellige tiles, carved woodwork, plaster and other significant details. . Interior color schemes are also based on local context, exploring natural landmarks of the region.

We suggest reinforcing them with local materials and works of Moroccan craftsmen — our choice of materials, furniture, lighting and objects is also included in the proposal for client’s consideration.

We have also introduced a brand-book of the future hotel. It includes a possible schedule of one day spent in Riad, hotel rooms naming concept after Berber traditional symbols, proposals for staff’s uniform and hotel’s identity.

Text explanation is combined with drawings made by the project’s team during site visits — the choice of analog graphic in this program is aimed to define the artisan nature of this peaceful retreat for a nomadic soul.
